Nancy Schier - Creative Director, Painted Monkeys
FJ: What lead you to create your company?
Nancy: I am a freelance designer and artist for over 27 years now. I use to work in fashion, stationery, Feature Animation, and video games. I loved being able to make my own hours and work from home, in the park, or a coffee shop. After having our kids I felt such guilt whenever I had a freelance job, I had to figure out how can I still work and be with my kids? But it had to be creative and artistic. I felt completely lost without finding a way to express myself.
One day my girl’s school asked if I knew how to face paint because they couldn’t pay for a face painter. I’m a painter so how hard could painting on faces be? I volunteered, and that was the beginning of Painted Monkeys. The crazy fun invites & favors I’d design for my daughter and son’s birthdays became an avenue for income. I started bringing in singing talents to play princesses, pirates, and fairies.
FJ: What was your key driving force to become an entrepreneur?
Nancy: Making a difference in someone's day. I bring incredible joy to families with our talent and passions.
FJ: What is your favorite aspect of being an entrepreneur?
Nancy: Making my own hours. Being part of a community and not a ghost as a design consultant. I love to see people celebrating and we are a small part of it!
FJ: What are three of your company’s goals?
- Empowering families and children
- Bringing lots of smiles and giggles!
FJ: What challenges have you encountered?
Nancy: Now we have to approach Parties in a whole different way. We cannot visit people in person so we are now offering virtual parties and entertainment including birthday grams or just little messages to lift children. I’ve also started giving classes through our characters in little life hacks and mindfulness.
We also are encouraging kids to start penpals with her via email or traditional since that’s a skill we are losing and offer our services by having you write to a princess or a superhero and you will receive a reply along with a recording.
FJ: What thoughts would you give to others who have similar aspirations?
Nancy: I say the best thing is to team up with local businesses to see how you can help them and they can help you because we all need to support each other since we’re all in this together.
FJ: What are your responsibilities as the business owner?
Nancy: To follow the rules! I would offer visits outside your door, window, driveway but at the same time we were trying to encourage people to stay home and this would send the wrong message.
FJ: Why will customers stay or do repeat business with you?
Nancy: Because we do a whole lot more than birthdays! We offer etiquette Classes camps & teach emotional intelligence through mindfulness to kids so we are just not a party entertainment company we have higher goals to make an influence and empower children
FJ: How do you market your business, and which tactics have been most successful?
Nancy: I have teamed up with other family businesses to promote each other and we do events together. For example Color Me Mine during this time we do paint with a princess zoom call using their to-go kits!
FJ: What is unique about your business?
Nancy: Anyone can dress up as a character or a princess the real talent comes when you see how they interact with the children or even better how they sing. The singing is authentic the costumes are handmade and so what makes us unique is that Our Talent is extraordinary. I try to hire individuals that have the same mission goals.
FJ: If you had one piece of advice to someone just starting out, what would it be?
Nancy: Be sincere to yourself. Do not do something because you think you’ll make money out of it because in the end it’s not worth it but if you are passionate about what you do when you only want to improve yourself even more
